Two unexpected trucks with 4 people (2 men, 2 women) come onto private property, smoking, joking — 3 of the 4 doing nothing at all of an indigenous nature. Owner? Perhaps the elderly owner lives alone, feels security and safety seems shattered. Perhaps has lived 60+ years there in a small home. Not rich. Unlimited access to whom and when, like at night, a group — dig for a clam and bring your friends. Unproductive broken shells littered around to cut bare feet. No control for one’s own peace and security and safety. And by the way, perhaps the owner is an avid proponent of indigenous people’s rights, but feels threatened by the aggressiveness and confrontation of prepared anger, ranting and videoing.
Not a simple one-sided situation. Journalistic Perspective, please.

Sat, 24 Aug 2024 10:52:45 +0000https://civileats.com/?p=57323#comment-309558Thank you for this important article. Wampanoag people have and continue to live sustainably on the land and around the waters of Cape Cod for over 12000 years. No Indigenous people have in 400 years brought these waters and the life within to the brink of death. What will it take for non Indigenous people to learn respect, and let go of their views of “owning” the ocean. We need instead to learn from Wampanoag people and join with them in instituting sustainable practices to clean our waters and return them to a healthy state.

She carefully navigates complex issues showing how mistrust and misunderstanding can fester. And given this country’s long history of marginalizing Indigenous people, oit’s not surprising this divide persists. Yet one hopes smoother waters – and richer harvest of shellfish and understanding, beckon.
