It is a voluntary program for producers who want to comply with specific standards and protocols in their operations, from cow-calf to feedlots. One of the key components of the program is antibiotic use and that the necessary “withdrawal” times have been followed before an animal enters the food chain. Of course the withdrawal time does not mean zero antibiotic use. The program requires an on-farm audit and review of an operators records for the administration of antibiotic (what, why, and dose). The program speaks to the fact that most producers want to be doing the right thing…raising their animals with a eye on the environment and the food chain. But I think Niman is on to the next level of verification and accountability which I believe both consumers and operators would welcome. Antibiotic resistance is a real issue that must be met head on.

I believe efforts like these are essential for boosting consumer leverage in the decisions of feedlot operators, ranchers, and farmers. It is difficult to convince people to prioritize “voting with their dollar”, especially if they are having trouble keeping up with the cost of living. The feelings of aggravation and exasperation upon realizing that your efforts have been manipulated by false labeling…FoodID could be a pathway to much needed consumer confidence. Kudos to everyone trying hard to “be the change”.
