One of the quickest and easiest ways to change this system would be to eliminate the subsidies for growing corn and soy. It would have to be done over 7 to 10 years to allow farmers to refocus their farms and equipment investments. But if the subsidies were gone the economics that allow for CAFOs would be much different and many would not survive. For those that did survive, the cost of their meats would rise to a level on par with small farmers using sustainable practices. Yes, food would be more expensive but we could take that subsidies money and expand food aid to lower income families so they would be able to afford healthy food.

This is a very important point. Industrial crops cause a great deal of environmental harm.

So the problem isn’t specifically or only the cheap meat that’s part of this system, it’s the entire degenerative system itself. The irony of alternative proteins and cultured stem cell proteins is that they don’t change that degenerative system. Instead such alternatives simply use this degenerative system differently to make other products. For example, Impossible Foods alternative protein uses GMO soybean isolates grown as monocrops with lots of phosphate inputs and glyphosate burn downs. Plus the cell media in bioreactors to grow cultured stem cells contains amino acids from monocropped soya and carbs from monocropped wheat or sugar, Moonshots aside, neither alternative actually resolves the real underlying problem, and that’s degenerative food production in the fields that destroying soil health.

If the cattle were allowed to graze, instead of factory farms, we wouldn’t be discussing this. Grazing allows the cattle to enrich the environment. They eat grass, poop and then move on to another area, spreading the fertilization of the land. It creates grasslands which are carbon sinks just like trees. Unfortunately that’s not how we raise cattle today. It’s all about profit, and that ruins the natural way of a healthy environment.
