Food comes to us through the intricate interactions among plants, microbes, animals, etc– we can’t even count those interactions, they are so multitudinous and complex. We won’t even understand what we’re missing when we eat this kind of stuff.

Whether the vertical farm greens are profitable at that price point is not clear.

While the capital and operating cost translates to Zero pesticide and may compete to achieve cost parity with field grown produce; we found growing with indoor LED lights could produce high value crops with enhanced flavor and phyto-nutrients inside.

By decentralizing and moving towards a distributed farm factory approach, the economic dynamics changes.

A household plant factory with 2 ft x 2 ft footprint could produce 2-3 heads of leafy greens daily for a small family regardless of weather conditions outside , consumes only 225 W. This results in less $0.50 per 120 g of lettuce in a 30-day cycle year round.

A grow-at-home, zero-mile food supply requires less labor, less processing and ultimately translate to lower produce cost.

Small businesses could set up similar distributed farms with smaller facilities with lower upfront capital to cater for hyper local needs.

Our lack of understanding of the nature and value of healthy soil is the source of many of today’s environmental and human health maladies.
